A Summary of….Life?

by Umm Muawiyah

Assalamu Alaikum.

[Note: Please read this post with an open mind, otherwise you’ll hate it. The style is different from all my previous posts. Then again, perhaps it isn’t. However, as with all my posts, if you find that I have written something wrong, then please do point it out.]

So, one hits puberty and life begins:

[Disclaimer: All images are courtesy of Google Images and do not belong to me.]

Teen: “I hate everybody! Absolutely everybody! I even hate my goldfish. School is such a drag and everyone treats me like a kid. I can’t wait until university.”

Freshman: “Oh man, I hate this. School was waaaaay easier. They give us so much work here. And I wish I was a senior already. They get to boss everyone around.”

Senior: “Everything was so cool and easy when I was a freshman. Now I have my senior project and I need to be in uni from morning till night. Man, I can’t wait until I finish uni and start work!!”

“Oh, job hunting is such a pain.”

“All my friends have jobs but I’m still unemployed. I feel like such a loser. I have so much free time that I’m going crazy. I have nothing to do.”

“Work. Work. Work. That’s all there is to my life. I’m at work all day so I have no time to do all the other things that I want to do. Also, my boss hates me so I get underpaid.”

“Oh, I need to find a job desperately. I need work, even if the salary is low.”

Her: “I want to get married. I’m so depressed. I want to get married. I want to get married!!! I won’t be happy until I get married. I’m the only one who is not married. Everyone else is married!”

Him: “I wish I was married. All the other guys have families to go back home to. All I have is my goldfish.”

Her: “I miss being single. Those were the good old days. Now I’m stuck cooking for this man who never praises me. And don’t even get me started about the mother-in-law.”

Him: “All my single friends go and watch football. And I am stuck at home with this nag. Oh and don’t even get me started about the mother-in-law.”

Her: “All those women who have children are so lucky. They must have so much joy. Oh, I can’t wait to have a baby. The loneliness is killing me. I would love to have a girl who can help me out in the house.”

Him: “All the men who have children are so lucky. They must be so happy. I would love to have a boy who will carry on my name.”

Her: “Hmm, on second thoughts, I think I’d like a boy.”

Him: “In that case, I’m going to change my mind and hope for a girl.”

Her: “Life is so terrible. I don’t get any sleep.”

Him: “Me neither. I miss the good old days when I could go to office without looking like a zombie”

Her: “Toys and noise everywhere!! I spend all my time in cleaning up this mess. I have no life. I have no time to do anything else. All those women who have no children are so lucky. They have so much freedom.”

Him: “School fees are so expensive these days. All the men who don’t have any children to worry about are so lucky. They don’t have all this responsibility. And they don’t trip over all the toys.”

“Sigh, I miss them so much. They grew up so fast. The house feels so empty and silent now.”

“I can’t wait for retirement so I can do all the things that I’ve been waiting to do.”

Him: “I’m so bored. I have nothing to do.”

Her: “Me neither.”

Him: “I wish I was in my teens again. Those were the good old days.”

Her: “Oh yes, we were so happy then. We had no worries whatsoever.”

“And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the Blessings of Allah, never will you be able to count them. Verily! Man is indeed an extreme wrong-doer, – a disbeliever (an extreme ingrate, denies Allah’s Blessings by disbelief, and by worshipping others besides Allah, and by disobeying Allah and His Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wassallam).” [Surah Ibrahim (14) : 34]

“Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but most men thank not.” [Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 243]

“But few of My slaves are grateful.” [Surah Saba (34) : 13]

You know, we’re always complaining about something or the other at every stage of our lives.

Tell me: If we’re always complaining, when are we finally going to be grateful to Allah for all that He has given us?

If we continue through life like this, we’ll get the worst of both worlds, because ingratitude is one of the roads to disbelief and having bad thoughts about Allah.

However, if we look at the bright side and are grateful, this will benefit us in this world and the next.

So, let’s stop complaining so much and let’s try to be grateful to Allah, regardless of whether we’re young or old, poor or rich, unemployed or employed, married or unmarried, childless or with children, working or retired, healthy or ill, etc.

“And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.” [Surah Ibrahim (14) : 7]

Assalamu alaikum, This comment was posted on 17th aug, during ramadan & ever since I have ben waiting for your reply. I would really appreciate if you could answer my was after your ramadan reminders
” Jazakallah khair sister for day 15 & 16 (actually for everyday!). There is a lot it leaves us to ponder about & somehow it pierces into the heart facts which cannot be just read & ignored. Just one qstn, Many times I have experienced, when thing go out of our control, there isn’t much we have a choice to do but leave it in His hands & Alhamdullilah, Alhamdullilah, each time He has sorted it out for me & Alhamdullilah I have thanked Him on the spot, but what do you do when the spoilt & rotten brat within us (our nafs) whispers to us later & tells that ‘I did it ‘ or ‘I won’ or that ‘I passed His test’ – all this on my own (when I very well know that Allah (swt) is behind all my success- not a leaf falls from the tree but with His permission, still….) – this whispering really bothers me & worries me a lot) – please clarify, if possible.”

Ps. I am very glad you are back

      Wa Alaikum Assalam Sister.

      How are you?

Please forgive me for not replying to your post. I had a very hectic time in the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Okay, before I answer the question, I’d like to clarify if I understood correctly.

      – When things go out of control, you have no choice but to have trust in Allah

      – Allah sorts all the matters out

      – You said “Alhamdulillah” at the time

      – You then started to think that the matter got sorted out due to your own good.

Did I get the story, right?

      Barakallahu feek.

          Assalamu Alaikum Sister.

Before I answer the question, I should point out that we should have tawakkul in Allah at all times, not just at times, where we don’t have a choice.

Well, what you’re suffering from is what everyone else suffers from as well – the whispers of the devil.

See, there are three ways that he spoils a good deed: 1) Before it or 2) During it or 3) After it

So, it seems that these thoughts that you’re getting is something that Shaytan is doing to spoil your good deed (i.e. having tawakkul in Allah).

What can you do about the wasawasa?

          1) Don’t dwell on them too much

          2) Don’t act upon it and don’t verbalise it

          3) Do istighfar and ask Allah to keep you steadfast

          4) Continue to seek knowledge of Allah’s Names and Attributes.

          5) Don’t let them cause you to stop any future good actions.

Don’t worry too much. The fact that you know Allah is the One who is behind your success, and the fact that this whispering bothers you, is a good sign, because it shows that you have iman, alhamdulillah.

I think you might find this article useful:

I hope that I answered your question. If not, then please feel free to ask further. If you’re not comfortable asking on a blog, then you can always email me (

          Barakallahu feek.

Assalamu alaykum, I finally got to see your latest posts! SubhanAllah, this is the THIRD time that I have come across this particular ayah from Surah Ibrahim through different sources within just ONE day! *shudders* Alhamdulillah.

Alhamdulillah for everything… “And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.” (14:7)

May Allah (swt) forgive my shortcomings and that of all the believing men and believing women, help us become very grateful as well as content and continue to guide us to the right path, Ameen.
